About ZipLevel
European distribution of the ZipLevel product has recently changed. As a result, the Stanley/Technidea style yellow ZipLevels have been replaced with a new European range of two models with slightly different specifications distributed by Umarex-Laserliner of Germany. The yellow ZipLevel is no longer available directly in the UK. The good news is that in the event that a service is needed, such as to repressurise the cord, there is a new European based Umarex-Laserliner service centre for both the Laserliner and Technidea units. Existing yellow units can also be sent to Technidea in the States or to the Stanley Compulevel service center in Besançon, France on a request at a Stanley Black & Decker stockist. The revised Laserliner units are very similar images below related to the yellow Stanley/ Technidea ZIPLEVEL PRO-2000 style units, differing in colour (grey), chord length (25m and 35m instead of 30m) and supplied standard accessories (no integrated stakes or rain jacket supplied with Laserliner 25m model).
The Laserliner ZIPLEVEL Pro 25 and 35 Elevation Measurement Systems are the best kept secret when it comes down to surveying a garden. If you have ever needed to take accurate levels (approximately +/-2mm), including around corners, in small spaces and behind objects and plants, this level is for you. Not to mention its speed and single person operation. The original Stanley Compulevel and Technidea ZIPLEVEL Pro-2000 are used and recommended by some highly regarded members of the SGD. Described as 'an almost perfect leveling device' by a Chartered Land Surveyor specialising in garden surveying. The Laserliner ZIPLEVEL units builds on this sucess offering two new models and European service facilities.
Formerly known as the Stanley Compulevel and Technidea ZIPLEVEL Pro2000, the Laserliner ZIPLEVEL Pro 25 and Pro 35 are now available in the UK with updated electronics allowing even quicker and accurate measurements to be taken. It is far easier and quicker than using a laser or 'dumpy' level and can be used in almost all weather conditions - usable in all light levels including full sun and heat haze, only highly fluctuating barometric and temperature conditions or extremely strong winds may require the unit to be re-calibrated during use. Recalibrating takes just seconds to perform and can be done in situ requiring only a small area of level ground - no need to return unit for a service unless the cord becomes damaged or it needs to be repressurised due to diffusion over time when "cord" will flash up on the display to indicate a service is necessary (approx every 3 years or more).
Setting the unit at the datum for 0.0 takes seconds. Further measurements are taken as absolute measurements from 0.000 datum - the ZIPLEVELs compact remote LCD display will take a few seconds to settle then beep to indicate that the absolute offset from datum in meters, cm or feet & inches can be read directly from the large LCD display at the point of measurement, even measurements taken out of sight of the base unit. There is no need to subtract staff readings, everything is absolute from the datum and clearly displayed on the LCD display. A reading of 0.522m will mean that you are 522mm above the datum whilst a reading of -0.232m will mean that you are 232mm below the datum. A special hold function allows the last reading to be retained even if the ZIPLEVELs LCD display cannot be directly viewed at the point of measurement, such as below ground, behind shrubs or above head height such as tops of doors, windows or overhangs.
The compact remote handheld ZIPLEVEL display/measurement unit is tethered to the base unit by means of a site friendly 25m (ZipLevel Pro 25) or 35m (ZipLevel Pro 35) long flexible fluid filled cord. The ZIPLEVEL base unit is placed in a convenient location then left - stakes are supplied with some models to secure the ZIPLEVEL base unit to soft ground if necessary. From then on, all measurements, including setting the datum are performed with the handheld LCD display unit. The remote ZIPLEVEL display unit contains all the electronics and is powered by a 9v alkaline battery that should provide around 60 hours active use. The supplied unipod allows measurements to be taken standing up if desired or held above head height. If it is necessary to take readings outside the 25m or 35m radius of the cord, or the +/- 6m vertical limit, the ZIPLEVEL can be set to carry mode which allows elevations to be measured at virtually any location, no matter how distant from the starting datum. The supplied user guide contains full operating instructions and describes the use of other modes such as setting the unit to an existing elevation benchmark. When packed up, the ZIPLEVEL display unit and cord retracts neatly into the base unit which also stores the unipod and two metal stakes. For transportation, a carry handle is built into the base unit that only measures approx 420mm x 280mm x 180mm.
